CHEWYSTORIES A quiet comfort

CHEWYSTORIES, the mainstay of this journal. Here I couple manips with ficlets to tell an ongoing
narrative. This has always set chewableprose apart as a place where you can find porn
accompanied by prose. The result being a more meaningful and believable slash fantasy, enjoy.

Ficlet | Captured and enslaved by Morgana, the surviving knights of Camelot scattered themselves among the other slaves, sentenced to manual labour in search of the treasure their captor so desired. However two of the knights, Sir Percival and Sir Gwaine, chose to band together and find solace in the company of each other. The comfort that they shared was a quiet one, looks of resolve throughout the labour that told each other not to give in to fatigue, for their lives were only as long as their bodies' usefulness. While weaker men fell and were killed when their bodies failed, by standing together they were twice as strong, even on occasion whispering encouragement when guards were not looking. Time was impossible to measure in their underground mine, night and day passed without notice. All they knew was their prison of torchlit dirt and stone, their night falling whenever the guards saw fit for them to rest. And these nights came fewer and further between as Morgana grew restless. When time for rest was upon them, Percival and Gwaine lay side-by-side away from the others. While labour made them hot and sweaty, the body soon cooled as they lay to rest and the guards' fires dimmed.

King Arthur saw his knights as his equals, he had often said they shared a bond that made them "more than brothers". Gwaine didn't understand this until his imprisonment with Percival. They were more than brothers, they were joined. So much so that as his body started to shiver from laying on the cold dirt floor, he found himself moving closer to Percival's sleeping form. Both naked from the waist up, Gwaine brought their bodies to touch, and found himself a bed of warmth, still firm and dirt covered, but also somehow tender. He didn't think of its implications, just saw it as a gesture of closeness and companionship. And when Percival stirred, instead of pushing Gwaine away, he maneuvered their bodies even closer so that Gwaine lay on top of him, interlocked so that their cheeks touched. And there, together as one, they rested.

Notes | This relates to 5x01, if you wondered how Percival and Gwaine made it through, wonder no more. Gifs by consultingclotpole. This post is dedicated to tomboytoy, I hope your changes bring you happiness. This entry is public as per my new open access policy.

The GoldenChewy is an annual prize that reaffirms my commitment to fostering a better comment culture on this journal. It is awarded to the user with the most Best ChewyStories Comment wins in the year.

The user who leaves the best comment on a chewystories post will have the opportunity to request one manip (posted prior to my open access policy) they would like made public. In order to be in the running you must be a chewyresident and have posted your comment on the chewystories entry before I publish a new chewystories post, on which the winner will be announced and invited to choose one manip to make public. If there are no outstanding comments, no winner will be chosen.

On the anniversary of this journal (9 January), the user with the most 'wins' of that year will be invited to request a manip of their very own. Not only will I create a slash manip of your choosing (with any two characters from any fandom you desire), but you will also receive the hi-res file of your manip (and be the only one other than myself who will have it). Hopefully this will encourage more of you to comment more generously. Let the feedback begin.

And the Best ChewyStories Comment for the last chewystories post goes to my LJ bestie zdae69 (tally: 2) for this comment, it was simply outstanding, thank you so much for your support. Keep up the effort everyone, because the final prize is pretty special.

Thanks for the dedication Joe. It's very sweet and I really do appreciate it. Thanks *hugs*
As for the manip itself, I don't know the characters since I've only seen a few episode of Merlin and didn't really get into it but I gotta say that I really do enjoy your story there, it's tender just the right way . As for the manip I think it's very nice, very sweet. Nice to see a great manip without boys parts being displayed without reasons ;).

Thanks again for the dedication ;)
chewableprose on October 25th, 2012 02:15 am (UTC)
You're welcome Tom, any chance I get to let you know what you mean to me I'll take it ;).

Thanks for your nice words about the manip, glad you found it sweet and tender, that's exactly what I was going for.

Lord, I thought I had posted this comment earlier, but I think I totally forgot to... (I always type my comments up separately in notepad because my comment box glitches sometimes...)

I guess this ficlet is indeed one of the best examples of the phrase "misery LOVES company." </p>

Once again, your overwhelming talent to make an enjoyable story to even those who are unfamiliar with a fandom is shining bright! This was the perfect tale to relax me as I ready to retire for the night. Nothing creates a romantic bond quite like two comrades who are facing a common turmoil. Also the detail that made me feel strongest for the characters was how time was unmeasurable; in a more modern sense, that's how I feel at work, with no clock or way to tell time, not knowing if your freedom is minutes or hours away. (I mean, I have my cell, but I try to avoid whipping it out so it won't look like I'm lolly gagging... It's a feeling that just makes one want to explode!) This is definitely one of the most heartwarming masterpieces of yours, Joe! I really enjoyed it! As I said, it was so relaxing to read!

Now your manip is completely in-tune with your ficlet! They correlate and flow together seamlessly! (A task that is so hard to do, but one that you do all too often.) As with all of you art, it's so very romantic! I really love the dirt effect on their bodies, it looks oh so realistic! Simply breathtaking!

I'm SO EXCITED to have received another tally towards The GoldenChewy! *Bounces up and down!*

Thank you Nolan, as always, you have left stellar feedback, it really means a lot to me.

Thank you for your nice words about the ficlet, that means a lot. And I'm glad I was successful in capturing the mood of the manip. Yes, that idea of unmeasurable time is very powerful I think, it's certainly one of the reasons why night can be such a lonely time.

What work are you in (if that's not too personal a question)?

Thank you, you always make me feel good about my work, which is the greatest gift any friend can give.

Thank you *hugs*
zdae69 on October 28th, 2012 06:08 am (UTC)
Well, your work deserves no less than stellar feedback, and I try my very hardest to give it! ^-^

Yes, night can be VERY lonely, especially with the fact that I can be such a night owl, and most of my friends head out at midnight.

I'm a flower designer at one of the local florist. (And, in ways, an Assistant manager.) My aunt runs it, and unfortunately, the only clock in the store is on her wrist... It's such a pain on slow days... -___- My aunt is very picky about things, so I never get my iPhone out unless absolutely neccesary. I'm actually surprised that she trusts me enough to make flower arrangements on my own, and often run the place by myself.

And once again, Joe. I feel exactly the same! It feels like I'm getting an awesome present when I get on livejournal, look up at my messages, see there is some new ones, click on them, and see some from you! ^-^

That's very cool Nolan, and what a fantastic outlet for your creativity. But yes, I'm empathetic to your situation, I remember when I used to work in a bookstore how slow some of the days would go ... and working with the public is hard work.

And yes, I'm a bit of a night owl too ... that's probably why I can't wait to see TV episodes, too much nightly time to kill, hehe.

And yes, a new message from you always brightens my day *hugs*

You're very up to date with the latest series, which has been rather weird. I'm not sure where the alien comes in to the overall plot! The slashy banter between Merlin and Arthur is still there - I think the producers know their audience - but it seems we still have to put up with too much Gwen and Morgana.
chewableprose on October 28th, 2012 03:56 am (UTC)
I certainly am, I love Merlin. And I agree, the producers certainly know what viewers want, and I must confess to LOVING Queen Gwen, hehe.

Thanks for the comment.

Thank you. And yes, definitely. I have big plans for Merlin (I suppose it's my effort to keep the series alive), so definitely watch this space ;).

Hey there I'm back
Sorry I'm just trying to catch up now!
My iPad broke down, then got fixed, then my eMail broke down, then got fixed then I BROKE DOWN (slightly dislocated jaw) & am still working on getting fixed!
This was outside your usual style of hot & heavy, focusing mor on the emotional bond.
I'm seeing a lot of growth from you as a Writer supplemented by Art work as opposed to the reverse which has been the standard. I'm loving this, you were already really good & you're only getting better (I'm so proud!).
I haven't seen any season 5 but I'm still catching up on season 4 on DVD. So far I haven't shipped these two but you make it seem so RIGHT.
Hopefully I'll catch up with more of your stuff later but I just wanted to check in... I HATE leaving you hanging!

Re: Hey there I'm back
It's great to hear from you. I'm sorry that you've been sick, I hope you get better very soon. Thank you for catching up on commenting. You know how much I appreciate your comments.

I loved season 5, by far the best. Highly recommended.

Thank you for your kind words. To be honest, I think very few actually read the ficlets, but I have been putting more effort into them, so I'm thrilled that that's showing. I've actually been thinking about extended fics illustrated with manips ... maybe one day when I have more time.

There are a lot more Merlin manips on the way, so hopefully they'll support your viewing of the final season.

Thanks friend.

Aw, they look so peaceful. Perfect.

Thank you, that's exactly what I was going for :).

This is so sweet. They look so calm and peaceful like they've done this before. They're so comfortable with each other's closeness. I remember this episode. I also remember them almost kissing when (SPOILER ALERT) Gwaine was dying.

Yes, me too. One of the best surprises of the final season was the bond of this pair. Thanks for the comment.

WOW What an awesome job!
