Ficlet | Unlike the days following their kiss in the meadow, this time Jacob keep his distance. And that was worse. Given it was Edward who initiated the second kiss — that left him naked, firm in Jacob’s embrace — he knew it had passed from being Jacob’s forbidden desires, and become his as well. He could feel Jacob waiting for his return, and a confirmation that they could be together. Edward avoided the house — and Alice’s increasingly pointed questions about some confusing visions she’d been having — using hunting as an excuse, and a means to ease some of his tensions. He wanted him, any doubts he may have had about that remained in the cabin of that truck. But it was a call from Bella, and an “I miss you too” response to his daughter, that told him, want or not, he had to end it. He knew how to find Jacob, as soon as he reached the treaty line there he was, waiting for him. Edward led him into the evergreen. When well away from the road he turned to him — Jacob was breathing heavily from the run out to meet his car, the soft smell of his breath making Edward long to taste his lips again — “I’m sorry Jacob, but this really must stop.” Jacob’s thoughts were confused and suspicious, “I wish I could read your head,” he said, reaching for Edward’s hand. The touch, so different from his own, made Edward tremble all over, “My thoughts would tell you the same,” he lied, the break in his voice betraying him, his eyes on Jacob’s still heaving chest. “Look me in the eyes and tell me you don’t want this,” Jacob said. Edward had been in a position like this once before, when he had to lie to Bella so she would let him go. Only this time, the excuse that the lie was to protect the one he loved, didn’t convince him. This was much harder. And fighting against everything he wanted most, he looked into Jacob’s wood warm eyes and said, “I don’t,” pulling his fingers from Jacob’s hold and leaving him there, broken hearted. As he walked through the green, Jacob’s anguished pleas that he reconsider followed him. Back in his car, back on the road, Edward shed his first immortal tear for the happiness he would never know and the man he’d hurt, fighting an urge to turn back and make it right.

Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner as Edward and JacobNotes | A return to the inevitable for the fourth part of this series, as Edward decides to honour his commitment to Bella and put the needs of family before his own. This is my first ‘holding hands’ manip, I like it because it highlights just how well-defined and policed appropriate male-to-male exchanges are. As innocent and common place as holding hands is, when two men do it, it seems to take on a decidedly sensual connotation — something I would argue is not the case when two women do the same (especially given how in it is right now for two girls to kiss and like it). This is interesting given that ‘shaking hands’, by comparison, is a culturally common exchange between men. Touch as a sensation can also be a particularly personal exchange of affection, and I wanted to explore that here, given how varied a sensation Edward and Jacob must create when touched. As you’ve probably noticed, true to the books (he’s supposed to be seven foot or something crazy “Edward’s 6'1 in the series and Jacob’s 6'5” courtesy starry_nights88, Bella certainly likes her boys tall), Jacob appears taller than Edward in this series. Considering one of the hottest qualities of Jake is his hulk-like mass, it just seemed right. Of course, Taylor’s littleness means, despite the best efforts of camera angles, he often appears smaller than he should on screen. See here for an illustration of the unique challenges Taylor’s height causes — that being said, Rob is a whole lot of man. This entry was cross-posted to jakeward, twilight_slash, rpattz_taycob, twi_cwc and twilightmanips, which is why it is not friends locked. If you’re visiting from one of these communities and you’d like to see more of my manips, comment on my friends only entry, but be warned, much of my work is sexually explicit.

Awesome as always. :Thwaps Edward upside head:

Could I ask a big favour and borrow this pic (with credit) for an online article I'm writing about Homoeroticism and Lycanthropy for Halloween?!

chewableprose on October 17th, 2010 12:19 am (UTC)
Thanks a million. And of course you can use the pic, I'd be honoured. Let me know when the article is up, I'd love to read it :o).
chewableprose on October 17th, 2010 12:44 am (UTC)
And yes, Edward deserves a clip around the ear for lying to Jake like that.

And I'm glad you're glad I think so lol. This is a completely useless comment but I couldn't help myself ;-p
chewableprose on October 19th, 2010 01:40 am (UTC)
Haha, such a high regard in which we hold each other's opinion, it's a beautiful thing ;o).
tomboytoy on October 19th, 2010 05:48 pm (UTC)
:-p

By the way, I recently read in a french magazine a slashy analysis of the movie "Deer Hunter" and I though that you might be interested about it because of your PhD.
Let me know if you want a scan of the article and if you'd like a translation of it (cause well you know, it's in french :-p)
chewableprose on October 20th, 2010 05:40 am (UTC)
Tom, that would be fabulous, thank you, I would love to read it, a scan would be wonderful. I haven't seen Deer Hunter, but will put it at the top of my 'to-watch list'. War dramas are often prone to queer readings given the close, male-only spaces in which their protagonists find themselves. Thanks so much for thinking of me :o).
tomboytoy on October 20th, 2010 10:05 am (UTC)
You're welcome. I'll scan the article and send it to you as soon as my laptop stops being a little b*tch (it doesn't recognize the power supply anymore and I'm out of battery so can't do much right now...).
chewableprose on October 20th, 2010 11:34 am (UTC)
Yay, thanks again. I know, blasted computers, I dropped an external hard drive tonight and lost a lot of data, not a happy chappy.
starry_nights88 on October 20th, 2010 06:01 am (UTC)
I would've commented MUCH sooner, but you see, I was away on family business. Kids can't watch themselves and all that. xP

Great continuation, though it made me want to kick Edward in the head (risking the broken foot and all). When will that dork learn to just do for himself instead of others. He can't make other people happy until he can make himself happy.

*siiiiigh*

Silly boy.

FYI (here's the dork in me, watch out) - Edward's 6'1 in the series and Jacob's 6'5.
chewableprose on October 20th, 2010 06:10 am (UTC)
Haha, no worries, thank you so much for the detailed comment (I love the feedback). Yeah, totally agree about Edward (he's not much better in the next part either). So true though, he needs to learn to love himself me thinks.

Awesome, thanks so much for clearing up the height, in that case, my proportions are almost right, almost *gets out measuring tape*, and I will amend the notes accordingly, and credit your genius of course, how nice it is to have friends with knowledge of the details :o).
starry_nights88 on October 20th, 2010 03:06 pm (UTC)
D'aw crediting isn't necessary. I just read too far into this stuff. x.x *shot*

The character bios on Twilight Lexicon were interesting, same with the interviews with SM. That's where I got a lot of my information.
chewableprose on October 20th, 2010 11:36 pm (UTC)
Well I'm grateful all the same for your knowledge :o).
angelus2hot on October 24th, 2010 01:38 pm (UTC)
OH MY! GORGEOUS!

*blushes* thanks so much, I really appreciate the comments.

Isn't it, he's such a beautiful boy. Thanks for commenting.
leoingenue on January 13th, 2011 10:50 pm (UTC)
So...why did you just make me squeal like a 14 year old girl? Hmmmm - not a flattering sound. However, Thanks for creating this. I love it (and don't think it's any more strange than the fact that I'm reviewing manips of 'Twilight'. Ha ha.
chewableprose on January 14th, 2011 01:22 am (UTC)
No apologies from me, I'm thrilled it made you squeal like a 14-year-old girl.

PS. Loving your reviews, thanks so much.
marki_fungi on January 13th, 2013 03:07 am (UTC)
You're creating a very good story here. Edward could never just shirk his responsibilities and this shows that. I think your point on hand-holding is spot on as well. I recently spent time working in the UAE and it's almost common place for men to walk around holding hands as just friends... there's no sexual cannotation to it whereas in the rest of the world, UK and US especially male hand-holding is a declaration of sexual intent.

I think you've set this scene perfectly and I hope all of this series is so well thought out.

Keep it up.
chewableprose on January 13th, 2013 09:15 am (UTC)
*blushes* Again, thank you. I do put a lot of thought into setting, context and content. So it's really nice to hear you say that ... and yes, the hand holding felt significant here, and I liked being able to explore obligations as well.

Edward needs to get over Bella and just marry Jacob <3
